Can CBD be used for weight loss and obesity?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a natural compound that is increasing in popularity in the health and wellness world. Anecdotal evidence leads us to believe that CBD can aid weight loss, but does it work?

CBD is one of the most popular cannabinoids extracted from the cannabis and hemp plant. The most well-known cannabinoid is tetrahydrocannabinol better known as THC and is responsible for the psychoactive effects of cannabis. CBD has no psychoactive effects meaning that using CBD will give you many benefits of cannabis without the high.

Because of legal reasons, research into CBD is still limited but is growing daily, however, the only approved use of CBD by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is for treating rare forms of epilepsy seizures, meaning, for now, CBD use is very much “off label”

While research suggests that CBD is showing promising results in the treatment of some health Concerns — some of which include relieving chronic pain, improvement of sleep, and reducing inflammation — there still needs to be more evidence to prove its effectiveness for the treatment of these health concerns.

The health and fitness world has been looking at research to the possibility that CBD may aid people trying to lose weight and reduce their risk of complications associated with being overweight, such as diabetes and metabolic disorder such as “metabolic syndrome X”.

we will go through the existing research behind CBD and weight loss and see if CBD can be a great additive to your health and fitness regime

How does CBD work for weight loss?

CBD may promote weight loss due to affects it has on the brain and body.

The benefits of CBD in the body are largely seen due to how it affects the body’s natural endocannabinoid system. The endocannabinoid system responds to different chemicals in the body and brain through two cannabinoids (CB) receptors, called the CB1 and CB2 receptors. The densest concentration of CB1 receptors is found in the brain and central nervous system. CB2 receptors are mainly in the immune system.

People suffering from high levels of body fat or obesity, however, have more widespread CB1 receptors, especially in fatty tissue. Due to the increase in CB1 receptors, researchers believe that there is possibly a link between the activation of the CB1 receptors and high levels of body fat and or obesity.

CBD works with many different cannabinoids to activate many receptors, such as endocannabinoid receptors and serotonin receptors. This may potentially play a major part in weight loss or other metabolic functions.

What does the research say?

There have been some studies that provide evidence to suggest that CBD may aid a person in losing weight or aiding in the prevention of other metabolic disorders.

Reduces appetite

Appetite control is one of the main methods of controlling weight loss and Many proponents say that CBD can help with weight loss by reducing their appetite. Most people associate cannabis with an increase in hunger better known as “munchies”, it is the THC component of cannabis that may increase hunger. There is little proof or anecdotal evidence that CBD acts the same way.

When THC stimulates the CB1 receptor, the body releases a hormone, ghrelin, that increases hunger and as well as food intake. However, a  2018 study notes that CB1 receptor antagonists may help reduce appetite and control obesity. A CB1 receptor antagonist deactivates or “switches off” the receptor. Stimulation of the CB2 receptors decreases inflammation and aids in the reduction of food intake, therefore anecdotal evidence supports cbd may aid in the reduction of being highly overweight or even obese. An animal study from 2012 found that CBD intake led to a reduction of appetite in rats, however more direct studies are needed to show a reduction of appetite in humans.

Turns bad white fat into good brown fat

One of the major claims to CBD for weight loss is the conversion of white, or “bad,” fat into brown fat. Brown fat may help the body burn calories and aid overall fat loss. White fat may potentially be linked to a major increase in the risks of many chronic health concerns, such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

2016 study provides evidence for this claim as the research found that CBD plays different roles in how the body utilises or interacts with fat and lipids. The study showed that CBD aided the conversion of white fat cells into brown fat cells. It also stimulated lipolysis(breaking down of fat) more effectively and efficiently.

CBD may be a promising addition for preventing and treating obesity, however further studies are needed.

A study done in  2018  explains how CBD may affect lipolysis, which is the breaking down of fat in the body. The process of turning white fat cells into brown fat cells actually changes how these cells act in the body. Brown fat cells have been shown to be a more active form of fat. When the body breaks down brown fat cells the burned off energy creates heat, meaning that they actually burn calories by increasing thermogenesis.

Due to a reduction of calories being necessary for weight loss and fat loss, CBD may aid in burning fat if it converts white fat cells to brown fat cells in the body.

Reduced of the risk of metabolic disorders

As other 2018 research notes, obesity has been show to affect several metabolic disorders, these disorders include:

Overstimulation of the CB receptors may be in part be responsible for this increase in metabolic disorders. Overactivation and stimulation of the CB1 receptors in the adipose fatty tissue throughout the body could be a massive contributing factor to increased obesity and metabolic risks.

A review of Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research highlights parts of previous studies on CBD and metabolic factors in animals, but more human studies are required.

However, in the study treatment using CBD has been shown to induce reduced total cholesterol by 25% in rats suffering from obesity. The anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits of CBD have also been shown to decrease blood sugar levels as well as show an increase in markers for liver health.
